Dr. Mohamud Sheikh Hassan Tani

Dr. Mohamud Sheikh Hassan Tani is an intellectual (born in Aware 1953) who organized self-help schemes to improve the social services in Hargeisa in the early 1980s, which led to his arrest November 19, 1981. At the time of his arrest he worked as a medical doctor at the Hargeisa Group Hospital. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison and was imprisoned for eight years.

He is a graduate of the Somali Medical University in Mogadishu (part of the second batch to graduate). After his studies, he worked as a doctor in Waajid, in Southern Somalia. In 1980 he was transferred to Hargeisa. After his release he moved to Canada where he became active in Somaliland diaspora groups and Somali peace groups.

 

 

Bashe Abdi Yousuf

Bashe Abdi Yousuf is an intellectual (born in 1953), who organized self-help schemes to improve the social services in Hargeisa in the early 1980s, which led to his arrest in 1981. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison and was imprisoned for eight years.

Before his arrest Bashe Abdi had worked in Saudi Arabia for five years. He came back to Hargeisa in 1979 to start his own business. In 1991 he moved to California. He graduated from California State University Hayward with a degree in computer information systems and business communication.

In the US, Bashe Yousuf, together with a group of diaspora members, asked the Center for Juctice and Accountability to file lawsuits against the former Prime Minister and Defence Minister of Somalia General Mohammed Ali Samatar. They sued him for torture, mass killings and other crimes against humanity in a case that went all the way to the US Supreme Court. General Samatar was found guilty of human rights atrocities and was forced to pay $21 million in damages.

Ahmed Hussein Abby

Ahmed Hussein Abby is an intellectual (Born in Hargeisa/Sheikh Madar 1946), who organized self-help schemes to improve the social services in Hargeisa in the early 1980s, which led to his arrest in 1981. At the time of his arrest he worked as a banker at the Somali Commercial Bank in Hargeisa. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison and was imprisoned for eight years. Between 1970 and 1980 Ahmed Hussein worked as a banker in Mogadishu and Marka.

 

 

 

 

Ahmed Mohamed Madar

Ahmed Madar, is an intellectual (born in Hargeisa 1954) who organized self-help schemes to improve the social services in Hargeisa in the early 1980s, which led to his arrest in December 1981. At the time of his arrest he was a biology teacher at Farah Omar secondary school. He was sentenced to 8 years in prison.

Ahmed Madar received his BA degree at Lafoole College of Education in 1976. After his release he moved to Norway and became the head of Somali National Movement Norway. In Norway he also studied Natural Resources Conservation Management at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. He is the former chairman of the Good Governance and Anti-Corruption Commission in Somaliland.

 

 

Dr. Osman Abdi Maigag

Dr. Osman Abdi Maigag is an intellectual (born in Hargeisa in 1943) who organized self-help schemes to improve the social services in Hargeisa in the early 1980s, which led to his arrest in late 1981. At the time of his arrest he was working as a doctor with a German team of doctors in the refugee camps. He also volunteered at the Hargeisa Group Hospital. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison and was imprisoned for 8 years.

He studied languages in Germany, and a technical course in Czechoslovakia. In 1970 he received a medical degree at Lublin Uni in Poland. Today, Dr. Osman is a chief doctor at TB hospital in Hargeisa.
